Racial Harmony Day

As part of National Education, schools commemorate Racial Harmony Day on 21 July every year to mark the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots. This is a day for students to reflect on and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation built on a rich diversity of cultures.

This year’s Racial Harmony theme is “Joint Hopes, Shared Memories”. The theme seeks to bring together the aspirations of our future together as a nation (Joint Hopes) and the
recollections of our past moments of joy shared with our friends from all races (Shared
Memories). These 2 aspects are consolidated in defining Singapore as our ‘Home’ and reflects our shared history and common destiny upon which our  sense of identity as Singaporeans is built.

Inherent in the notion of ‘Joint Hopes’ is the desire for society to come together. This places an emphasis on community engagement and echoes PM Lee’s assertion about the importance of community building and ‘working hard to safeguard (the nation’s) harmony’. Given Singapore’s rapid rate of progress and the increasing spectrum of global opportunities, it is even more important for Singaporeans to believe in a joint vision of our destiny as a people. This vision of a common destiny will unite us against new fissures and pressure points, and allow us to reminisce with our friends years from now.

Additionally, the notion of ‘Shared Memories’ aims to underscore a shared recollection of our multicultural heritage through our different cultural landmarks, spaces or traditions in the multiracial society we live in. The different facets of our multiracial history and multicultural heritage collectively govern the consciousness of the ‘Singaporean identity’ and entrench our sense of rootedness to this little island that we proudly call home.

RVHS is celebrating the ocassion on the 20th July 2011 through a series of activities for different levels of students.
